Pregnancy Care

There are many joys of pregnancy such as feeling those first kicks, the extra calories we get to consume, and even the thought that our body is creating another human! However pregnancy is not always a walk in the park! Pregnancy puts a large physical stress stress on your body - after all you are carrying and growing a tiny human in there. Unfortunately, back pain, neck pain and pelvic pain are common for pregnant moms. These pains are a result of the increased weight in the torso, the relaxing ligaments due to hormones and the altered posture as your body accomodates to the growing baby. This can lead to difficulty performing tasks and even a more challenging labour if not addressed.

The mom's centre of gravity moves forward to the front of the pelvis as the baby grows. This increases the curve of the lower back creating an abnormal pressure on the low back, pelvis, hips and even the knees.

Did you know that the most common issue with pregnancy is low back pain. The increased pressure on the spine places additional pressure on the nerves which can result in local pain or pain wherever those nerve supply. Sciatica, an irritation of the sciatic nerve that runs down the leg is one of the common conditions pregnant women suffer from.

Chiropractic treatment during pregnancy can provide a great relief not just for mom, but baby too! A well aligned pelvis and back, along with relaxed muscles and ligaments provides baby with more space to not only move around inside mom, but also during labour to get in the proper position and aid in a successful natural labour.  This is one of the reasons Dr. Carly is trained in Webster Technique.

The Webster Technique

Although this technique is often referred to as the "breech baby technique" or  "baby turning technique" these are actually not accurate descriptions as chiropractors do not actually turn the baby.

This technique was specifically designed to detect and correct for pelvic subluxations that occur in a pregnant patient. By correcting pelvic positioning the supporting pelvic and uterine structures are also restored. When the pelvis is out of alignment and this improper position persists in the pregnant patient, the resulting soft tissue tension in the pelvis may produce uterine constraint. This constraint may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming an optimal fetal position, which may affect birth outcome. If we remove the constraint ideally the baby will move into a head down position and be able to assume the best position possible for the birth process. The head is the heaviest part of a baby such that gravity encourages the baby to be head down. It just so happens that this also makes for a safer birth. However, sometimes the body needs a little help and that's why chiropractic and on that note Webster Technique exists. Dr. Carly Butterworth is proficient in this technique and by incorporating this in your care plan can support a more comfortable, safer, and easier birth.

Post Natal Chiropractic Care

One day you have a baby inside your belly and the next it's in your arms. Unfortunately your body does not just bounce back to your pre-baby self. Over the last 10 months you grew a human inside of you and ever so slowly loaded your body with additional weight, posture changes and different biomechanics so the body adapted. But now the body is not offered the opportunity of gradual adaptation, rather it is an instant change. Even though I am sure your labour didn't feel "instant".

You have been thrown into a world where this little human demands great things - food, cuddles and attention are only a few things that you must regularly provide.  As new moms you are thrown into a demanding role of breastfeeding, bending over to pick up baby and various items, holding baby for extended periods of time and at times limited sleep. You need to be healthy for not only you, but your whole family and chiropractic can help you get there sooner! Treatments with Dr. Carly Butterworth can assist in realigning the body after the pregnancy and speed up the transition to a healthy post-pregnancy body.

Dr. Carly Butterworth provides a safe and effective personalized care throughout your pregnancy and in the postpartum period. A thorough examination provides the information needed to ensure that you receive the care needed to ensure a healthy pregnancy,  childbirth and beyond.
