Motor Vehicle Accident

Motor vehicle accidents occur every day and can negatively impact the drivers, passengers and pedestrians. The damages often go beyond the vehicle. Even at a low speeds there can be significant forces applied to bones, muscles, ligaments and joints. Often our first instinct is to go to the hospital but we need to remember that this setting is used to identify and treat life threatening and time sensitive injuries such as concussion, fractures, bone breaks, impaled objects, internal bleeding and spinal injuries. Soft tissue injuries that may not be immediately apparent such as whiplash should still be addressed and can increase in severity and symptoms over time. A thorough assessment by a chiropractor will provide assessment beyond emergent concerns.

What is whiplash and how is it caused?

The most common type of injury caused by car accidents is whiplash. However activities such as skiing, horseback riding and even sports can be associated with whiplash injuries. Whiplash occurs when a sudden, jarring movement of the head is sustained backward, forward or even to the side. It is a myth that you need to be travelling at high speeds to sustain whiplash. Whiplash can occur when the vehicle is moving as slow as four kilometres per hour. Whiplash has the potential to not only affect the muscles, but also the bones, ligaments and alignment. Intense pain is one of the main symptoms, however you may also suffer from:

  • Blurred vision

  • Neck stiffness or pain

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

  • Shoulder pain

  • Pain between the shoulder blades

  • Reduced range of motion in the neck and shoulder

  • Arm pain or numbness

  • Low back pain

Whiplash may not be associated with a sudden onset of symptoms. This may be because the body has yet to respond to the sudden force or that the body is suffering from shock and masking the symptoms. Symptoms may manifest immediately or may take day, weeks or even months to appear and that's why it is important to be throughly assessed by a chiropractor after an accident. If left untreated, whiplash can evolve into long-term pain and the longer it will take to get your body back to a pain-free, healthy state.

How can my chiropractor help with whiplash?

Whiplash has various levels of severity and may be associated with a variety of symptoms so every case of whiplash injury is unique and must be treated as such. Treatment interventions for whiplash will vary from office to office, however Dr. Carly Butterworth tends to use these common techniques aimed at restoring you to your healthy self as soon as possible:

  • manually adjusting the spine, neck and joints

  • muscle release and PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation)

  • trigger point therapy (TPT)

  • exercises designed to reduce disc derangement or train the nervous system to better coordinate and control movement patterns and restore range of motion

  • ergonomic and lifestyle changes to limit habits or activities that may aggravate the condition
