Back Pain in Orangeville
Why Does Back Pain Occur?
Patients often ask me - the chiropractor - what movement, position or activity caused their back pain. Should they be doing something differently? Do they need a new mattress? Is their workspace ergonomics impacting their body negatively? To be honest there are many things that can negatively impact you and can contribute to your pain. Sometimes it is caused by a sudden injury or trauma to the spine such as a car accident while other times it may be a trauma that occurs to the back over time, such as a repetitive strain injury or from lifting items improperly at work over a series of time. Other times pain can even take years to develop whereas the discs between the bones in the back degenerate and slowly put pressure on the nerves eventually causing pain. Some more frequent causes of low back pain include pregnancy, weight gain, sustained poor posture and repetitive tasks. Chiropractic treatment addresses all of these causes and more. So when a patient asks what caused the pain I have to assess so much more than when the pain first began. It often surprises patients to know that sometimes this issues with their spine began in childhood when they played a contact sport, had a car accident or improper biomechanics.
Back pain is now considered a global epidemic and affects about 80 per cent of the population. Meanwhile, widespread opioid addiction has caused physicians to limit the amount of opioids they prescribe to relieve pain. The question you need to ask is what pain pill or drug is going to correct the spine's alignment and correct the problem? You're right - there isn't one! That's why chiropractic exists. It's time we treated the cause of your pain and not just provide you with a bandage solution.
How is Back Pain Diagnosed?
An initial assessment at Westend Family Chiropractic & Wellness includes subjective and objective components. That is to say the patient perception of the pain and limitations are equally as important as the doctor's assessment as they move and feel the muscles, joint, tendons and ligaments of the body. Combining the information from the intake form, history consultation and examination helps to determine a specific diagnosis of what is causing the back pain. To determine the reason for the back pain, X-rays may also be required. In some cases, more in-depth imaging like ultrasound, MRI or CT scan may also be needed. Although we do not have on site x-ray we do offer imaging at MIC Medical Imaging just down the road. Click here for directions and to see how close we are! Should x-rays be required this cost will be covered through OHIP. Diagnosis is like a puzzle where each piece of information, be it from the intake, the patient, the exam or even imaging provides a piece to the bigger picture.
How Can Chiropractic Care Help With Back Pain?
Chiropractic care can help to relieve back pain and can even prevent the reoccurrence of the pain. By dealing with the underlying cause of the pain Dr. Carly is able to deal with the problem rather than just mask the pain like many drugs, ointments and lotions do. Spinal adjustments and muscle rebalancing ensures the spine is in proper alignment and able to function as it should.
Dr. Carly may recommend an exercise routine to ensure the core and low back is strong and balanced to prevent further injury or pain. These exercises should be catered specifically for you as every body is different. Rather than giving you a dozen exercises catered for low back pain we would much rather give you 3, 4 or even 5 exercises that complement the work we are doing together in our office.
